During the repair or manufacture of an airplane, there
are occasions when a hole will be mis-drilled or a crack
might develop which will require the hole to be reamed
up a size. In the past, a shrink fit bushing was used
to repair or
resize the hole.
The BushLoc System provides a convenient method for
quickly and safely installing interference fit bushings
using FTI's Split Sleeve Cold Expansion technology.
BushLoc is designed to be used
in applications where high retention force and ease
of installation is desired but maximum fatigue life
improvement through cold expansion may not be necessary.
BushLoc is a complement to FTI's ForceMate bushing installation
process and is the perfect method for re-sizing or repairing
discrepant or damaged holes in existing structure or
fixing holes in new production. BushLoc also allows
users to manufacture their own bushings.
• Bushings are installed at room temperature,
eliminating the need for cryogenic fluids that may lead
to condensation and corrosion.
• Installations result in a reliable and consistent
interference fit.
• Installations are quick, requiring moderate
access to only one side of the hole and can be accomplished
using hand held tools.
A BushLoc installation eliminates the limitations normally
associated with a shrink or press fit bushing installation
allowing the user the flexibility to solve difficult
problems in the design, manufacture and repair of metal
structures.

Step 1.Place a pre-lubricated split sleeve on the
mandrel and place the custom made bushing over the sleeve
Step 2. Insert mandrel/sleeve/bushing
assembly through the hole, holding nosecap flush against
structure
Step 3. Activate puller
Step 4. Remove and discard
sleeve
Step 5. Ream if necessary
BushLoc uses the same PowerPak and puller as the other
processes. Customers manufacture all BushLoc bushings,
since each application is so unique. FTI provides all
other tooling:
